Rate of Return and Risk

The goal of investing is to create the largest rate of return for the lowest amount of risk. In theory this is straightforward and easy to understand. In practice it can be confusing. Rate of return refers to how much money you are going to get in return for your original investment. This is the most important result of investing. Rate of return is determined by the increase in asset value and any money received while holding on to that asset. Rate of return can be determined by using the following equation:

Capital Gain (gains-loss) + Cash Received (dividend or interest) / initial investment = Return Rate

Rate of Return and Risk

Risk refers to the likelihood that you will lose your money. As an investor restricts risk, they also restrict the amount of return they can receive on their investment. Probability should play an important role in choosing your investments. Probability refers to the likelihood that something is going to happen. When looking for investment vehicles consider the probability, based on risk, that you will get your money back.

There are several low risk options which are perfect for those folks who want to invest but are not interested in high risk. The most low risk investment you can make is in U.S. Treasury Bonds, which guarantee a consistent rate of return. At the opposite end of the risk spectrum, you have high yield investments. This type of investment offers a huge rate of return, sometimes over 20%, but they also force you to risk your original capital. If things go poorly, you will lose your whole investment.

Obviously, if you want to be successful in investing you need a way to manage risk. A great way to measure the risk of a particular investment option is to look at the worst, likely, and best case outcomes. If you can live with the worst and likely outcomes then it is probably a good investment.

If you are interested in investing but overwhelmed and confused about determining risk then find yourself a local financial advisor or brokerage firm that help you determine what risk level is best for you. Another way to determine risk is to look at a stock's past performance. How a stock did in the past is a good indication of how it will do in the future.
Remember, all investing has risk associated with it. As uncertainty of success increases so does risk and potential profit. The goal of all investments is to maximize return and minimize risk.

5 Tips for Enriching Your Child's Education

You have to feed your kids good stuff. Not just good food, but good life experiences too. I love homeschooling but realize it is not possible for every family. Lately I have been getting emails of admiration from non homeschooling Moms who want a little help on how to supplement their child's education. I love it! I thought I would write down some of the things we have done over the years as a jumping off point.
First I would recommend taking stock of were your child is, physically, mentally, relationally, emotionally, spiritually and academically. Make a list if you have to. Maybe we get things turned around when we hyper focus on academics and leave other very important formational stuff out? Let the Lord lead you, on things that you see that your child needs. Do they need a good dose of habit training, how to do chores or how to take care of their hygiene? These skills are as important as academics. Do they need to read some deep literature, other then fast food type stuff that is typically marketed to early elementary readers? If you have never read a classic to your child or if they have never read one to themselves, then I would say that is something you need to work on.

You get the idea. Only you will now that for each of your children and if you don't know, maybe you are just too busy or too over committed and you need to slow down a bit so you can take stock or where you and your littles are at. I would recommend you intentionally add a few things into your family rhythm to help give you some well balanced nutrition for you growing brood, weather home educated or not.
Reading with your child is a major buzzword right not, but what your read is rarely talked about. Pick a family read aloud. Stretch and pick a classic or even some Shakespeare. Charles and Mary Lamb make a great version just for kids. Living literature will take you and your child into deeper things like geography and history and science. These books are simply outstanding and every family would do well to read through them together. We have gone through seasons of this on and off in our family and are right now back in this season. Read a chapter after dinner, or pick one night a week to read out loud to each other, everyone taking turns at reading out loud. Make your children earn video game or TV time by reading 3 for 1. For every 3 minutes they read, they can earn one minute of TV or video game time. It works for us, umm when I stick with it. Instead of filling your house with the sound of a TV on, play some music quietly in the background.

Think through some practical things you can do with your kids.
Take them to the post office and have them do the whole deal, buy the stamp, address, and mail the letter, use the automated kiosk etc. Go to the hardware story and but the supplies for a family project and involved them in actually checking out and paying for the items. Involve them in your whole life. Even the simple things can be a learning moment. You don't have to be teacher or a school to schedule a field trip. You can make a few phone calls in your local area and set up some family things for you all to do together.

Okay, I know that is technically eight but I was on a roll. Life is short, and there are so many things you can do and accomplish when your kids are big and have flown the coop. So fight the urge to have it all and do it all right now. Take a little time, in whatever way you can, to add a little richness to your child's education today.

For a Terrific House, Choose a Terrific House Design

My grandfather was a developer, my father was a builder, and my mother was an interior decorator. Our family was all about houses and house design. My favorite past time as a child was drawing up house plans on graph paper. I particularly liked drawing in the doors and windows.

I did not go on to become an architect or designer, but I'm still fascinated by house plans. When my friend Jenny decided to build a new house on her riverside lot, I was thrilled to hear about the endless meetings with the architect and the builder. All the details and problems were as intriguing to me as a good mystery. I loved looking at the house plans. In particular, I wanted to know where everything was to go, especially the doors and windows.

Seeing the finished house, with big windows overlooking the river and views from every room, I'm more convinced than ever of the importance of professional house plans. Jenny's house is small, no more than 1000 square feet, but because of the excellent design it doesn't feel small. Everything has a place; no space is wasted, but nothing is cramped. She has the ease and convenience of a small house without feeling boxed in.

All houses, not just small houses, benefit from quality designs. I'm renting a house right now and it just makes no sense. The entryway and living room as so dark they are not very inviting. And there's no air circulation in the dining room, so we're all sweating by the second course. There's a window in the shower, so the window frame is rotting away. Very bad planning.

One good thing about this house is the landscaping in the front yard. My rental house is in a hot climate, so the big banyan trees provide valuable natural cooling. This brings up two points about house design: landscaping makes a difference and energy-saving design is essential these days.

Landscaping is part of the overall house design. For good results, the designer should consider the landscape possibilities when designing the house. That doesn't mean that the details of what gets planted where need to be decided before the house is built. But it does mean that the house design needs to take into account the natural landscaping and the homeowner's garden desires.

It's not that difficult to design an energy-efficient house. Extra insulation, thermal windows, and other "green" methods and materials pay for themselves in a few years. Jenny's house is so comfortable; it's easy to heat and has no drafts. That's another advantage of a small house; it's more efficient and therefore less costly to operate and maintain.

Jenny built a custom-designed house, but you can find plenty of great stock house plans that you can modify to fit your needs. Whether you choose a custom design or a stock design, make sure the house design you choose will give you the home you want. And be sure the doors and windows are in the right places!

Stocks that pay dividends can be a good alternative for investors either seeking regular income from their investment portfolio, or more consistent returns from their stock investments. An investment in stocks that produce consistent dividends can be an ongoing source of profits for your portfolio. These are some of the characteristics that these income producing investments provide:

Stocks that pay dividends can represent a single company, or they can be many companies under the organizational structure of a holding company, trust, closed end mutual fund, ETF, etc. It is important to note that a majority of companies do not qualify for dividend investing for the simple reason that they do not pay dividends. Companies that pay dividends do so because their management teams and boards of directors make a conscious, regular, and most importantly - discretionary - decision to pay their shareholders a dividend. Stocks in general are volatile, but stocks that pay dividends are usually lower in volatility than the overall stock market. This is because investors are confident enough in the earnings of these companies, and the income they produce on a regular basis for their shareholders, that they reward this stability with lower price volatility, due to the justified view that these stocks are safer than average. There are also tax advantages to owning dividend paying stocks. Capital gains only trigger a taxable event when these stocks are sold, just like regular stocks. The key tax advantage is that right now, the maximum federal income tax rate for dividends is only 15%. This tax rate is lower than the tax rate you pay on bond interest, which is usually taxed at the same rate as your salary. 15% is typically much lower than your marginal tax rate for other sources of income.

As you can see, stocks that pay dividends have characteristics that set them apart from the overall stock market. These income producing stocks may have a place in your investment portfolio.

Did you know that there are many penny stocks traded on the major exchanges-like AMEX? Many stock investors think penny stocks are only found on the OTCBB or Pink Sheets, but that's just not true.

The AMEX has many penny stocks-refresher: penny stocks are stocks trading at or less per share. If you're not sure how to find penny stocks, there are a couple of ways to do it.

Unfortunately, the Yahoo! Finance stocks screener, at the time of this writing, doesn't allow you to specify an exchange, such as the AMEX, but it does a nice job anyway.

A quick scan of the AMEX yielded approximately 320 penny stocks being traded. As I mentioned, there are many penny stocks being traded on the major exchanges, such as the AMEX, NYSE and Nasdaq.

To make this soup, you shall prepare a stockpot, heat over medium heat. Place in tomatoes, onion, cloves and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and run the mixture through a food mill.

In the empty stockpot, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour to make a roux, cooking until the roux is a medium brown. Gradually whisk in a bit of the tomato mixture, so that no lumps form, then stir in the balance. Season with sugar and pepper. Serve.

A great Chinese Soup Recipe. The following recipe are for 4 servings. You can also replace the chicken with shredded fresh crab, surimi or flaked canned tuna.

For ingredients, you shall prepare for 1" of fresh ginger (peeled), 3 cups of chicken stock, 1 tbsp of soy sauce, 1/2 tsp of sesame oil, 3/4 cup of canned creamed corn, 1 ounce (30g) dried rice vermicelli noodles, 1 tbsp of cornstarch mixed to a paste

with 1 tbsp of water, 1/2 cup of skinless rotisserie chicken breast (shredded finely), 1 thinly sliced scallion.

To make this this soup, you shall crush the piece of ginger with the side of a large knife blade, keeping it in one piece. Combine & place the ginger, stock, soy sauce and sesame oil in a saucepan and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 3 minutes, discard ginger. Add in creamed corn, noodles and scallion; simmer for additional 3 minutes. Stir in cornstarch paste and keep stirring to thicken the soup. Add shredded chicken breast, warm through, serve.
